Six reasons why Aalgo is the best Halloween gift for any parent
Halloween gifts aren’t really a thing, and I’m not sure they should be. But sometimes the school holidays can feel a little daunting for parents and children alike, so occasionally a friend may need something small and thoughtful to help them through it.
If, like me, you adore this season — the leaves, the colours, the trick-or-treaters and, of course, the incredible costumes — then you’ll probably be embracing it head-on.
There are parties to organise, children to dress up, cakes to bake, houses to decorate, playdates to arrange and activities to think up.
During this brilliant holiday, however, children and adults with sensitive or eczema-prone skin can sometimes find the change in weather, routine and products a little more challenging.

1. Autumn Means Colder Days and Warmer Homes
As autumn gets into full swing, the central heating goes back on and out come the extra layers, woolly jumpers and thick tights.
All of this can leave sensitive skin feeling hotter, drier or more uncomfortable.
If clothing or central heating seems to be making skin feel dry or irritated, keep bathing gentle and use lukewarm rather than hot water.
A simple seaweed bath can help dry skin feel softer and more conditioned without adding a complicated list of products.

2. Holiday Sleep Patterns Can Affect Sensitive Skin
We all try to maintain the normal term-time sleep routine, but with the excitement of trick-or-treating, sleepovers and Halloween activities, children often end up going to bed later than usual.
For children with sensitive skin, tiredness and a disrupted routine can sometimes coincide with more scratching or discomfort.
A calm, lukewarm bath before bed can become a simple way to slow things down after a busy day.
Allow around 15–20 minutes for children to relax and play, then gently pat the skin dry afterwards.

3. Take Care with Halloween Face Paint
Every child deserves the scariest, funniest or cutest Halloween costume possible, and face paint is often part of the fun.
However, some face paints can irritate sensitive skin, particularly if they contain fragrance, strong pigments or ingredients the skin hasn’t encountered before.
Where possible, patch test new face paint before Halloween and remove it gently at the end of the day rather than scrubbing.
Afterwards, keep the skincare routine simple and use lukewarm water to cleanse the skin.
4. Sweets, Parties and Teenage Skin
Halloween usually means parties, trick-or-treating and plenty of sweets.
Rather than worrying about one evening of treats, focus on keeping the rest of the skincare routine consistent.
For teenagers with acne-prone skin, gentle cleansing, removing makeup before bed and avoiding harsh scrubbing can be more helpful than adding lots of new products.
For younger children with eczema-prone skin, stick to their usual gentle bathing and skincare routine rather than trying to compensate with extra products.

5. Keep Children’s Skincare Simple
With everything else happening during the Halloween holidays, it’s helpful to know that your child’s skincare routine doesn’t need to become complicated.
Aalgo is based around organic Atlantic seaweed with nothing added and nothing taken away, making it easy to incorporate into a simple bathing routine for dry and sensitive skin.
Keep the water lukewarm, avoid unnecessary fragrance and gently pat the skin dry after bathing.
6. Remember That Self-Care Is Family Care
Don’t let the pressure of keeping routines perfect take over the school break.
There will be late nights, playdates, parties and probably more sweets than usual — and that’s okay.
When you get a quiet moment, take time to relax too. A warm bath, a little quiet time or simply slowing down at the end of the day can make a busy school holiday feel more manageable.
